BOKA NAVY SAILORS AND OFFICERS' DRESS | PICTURE GALLERY |
According to tradition, the origins of the dress worn by Boka Navy at various festivities can be traced to 16th century, with certain elements taken from Italy and Spain – a fact that does not come as a surprise considering maritime routes at the time. The influences behind the creation of this dress, adoption of the fabric, cut, details and decorations should be sought in links between Boka seafarers and the Mediterranean, but also the age-old tradition of Kotor craftsmanship, especially in regards to the design of the material and clothing inventory. In search of similarities between the cut and elegance of folk wear and “common Mediterranean culture”, archival records led Pavao Butorac to point to the complexity of varied influences on clothing and weapons. Describing “main features of the true Boka dress”, he concludes that the “Boka Navy dress we know of today, which was derived from the ancient fraternity of Kotor seafarers, is none other than the old Boka dress”. A white shirt (often decorated in the front with lace) with silver, gilded buttons is covered with a sleeveless vest (ječerma), lavishly decorated with golden ribbons, tassels and silver buttons. The vest is layered with a koret with sleeves, also decorated with ribbons and silver buttons. It is open in the front, giving a better view of the vest and the small weapon on the waist. Admiral, Vice Admiral and officers wear black dolman adorned with golden ribbons and rank insignia. Black trousers are notably wide (6–8 meters of silk), which is why they are visibly baggy in the upper part and narrow down at the knee. Koret and trousers and firmly tied with a wide and colorful belt. Today, black socks are worn up to the knee, while decorated velour gete also used to be worn in the past. The dress is worn with low black shoes, also called crevlje, mulice and gondolete. Instead of shoes, Admiral and Vice Admiral wear boots. A low hat called ćeverica is decorated with heart-shaped wire. Also adorning it are a flower with a spiral pestle, leafs made with silver wire and petals made from red silk. Officers wear fur calpacs with plumes; Admiral and Vice Admiral white calpacs with matching plumes, while other officers wear brown calpacs with dark plumes. Twelve ranks, from sergeant to admiral, have small alterations in dress with special rank insignia. The Little Admiral wears the same uniform as the sailors: ćeverica cap, white shirt, bow tie, vest, koret, silk belt, holster, quiver, trousers, black socks. The dress is prescribed by the Regulation on dress, ranks and appearances of the current membership of Boka Navy Kotor. |
