DRESS & WEAPONS

BOKA NAVY WEAPONS | PICTURE GALLERY

As a symbol of an age-old battle against pirates and Ottomans, weapons are an integral part of the Boka Navy dress. A knife and two small pistols are usually worn at the waist (called kubura and ledenica) with a musket on the back (with miquelet locks, called džeferdar or šaralija).

Handguns are carried in the lavishly decorated leather holster with a partition, the so-called ćemer. It holds pistols and a knife, tightly secured with a 4-meter long girdle made of silk or satin. Silver, gilded or gold powder flasks (ćese) hang around the waist. On the right side are pouches (tobolac) for powder and tobacco, and smaller ones for tinder, cuttings and snuff. Even though this entire arsenal was meant to fight pirates and Ottomans, most of the names for clothing and weapons were adopted from Turkish.

Nowadays, Boka Navy sailors no longer wear weapons around their waist. The only exception is the Little Admiral, who usually has a flintlock in his holster. Admiral, Vice Admiral and officers carry decorative sabers at the waist. Other members carry muskets. Lancers are armed with lances.

Once the kolo dance starts, the weapons are set aside.
